Todd Hobin’s History of Rock Concert

It doesn’t look like a lecture. It feels more like a concert. It is Todd Hobin, the professor sharing stories and songs as he takes you step by step through the Rock Era.

The concert is the result of Hobin’s college course, “This History of Rock.” His students would enthusiastically tell their parents and friends about his lectures on the topic, peppered with his live demonstrations on the piano and guitar. They would ask if there was a way they could take the course too. Well, now they can. And it’s a history as told by one of Rock’s early practitioners. A man who witnessed Rock-n-Roll’s very inception.

According to Professor Hobin, “The Rock Era is too broad and too diverse to cover in a semester, let alone in a two-hour concert.” But with a “little help from his friends,” he’s created an exciting waltz through one of the most dynamic periods in music history. The concert features Letizia, Brett Hobin, and Steve Orlando, Jr. Together they demonstrate early pop music with snippets of classic songs. Hobin reveals the origin of the Blues and how it infiltrated Country Western, Folk, Pop, and even Church music. The band also shares how all these influences have affected their own recordings. Their new release features songs and the musical score for the award-winning film “The Artist & the Astronaut,” composed by Hobin.

The lecture is punctuated with his personal experiences having worked with some of the early practitioners of rock’n’roll such as Little Richard, James Cotton (Muddy Waters), The Kinks, The Beach Boys, and many more. He is still performing today while continuing as a professor and a fan of Rock. He has played in concert halls, stadiums, barrooms, roadhouses, fields, cities, and too many towns to mention. Hobin says of his life-long adventure, “I am a road warrior who is still playing, still writing songs, still recording, still practicing, and still dreaming.”
